The
area of Western North Carolina and Upstate South Carolina is
blessed with an amazing pool of artistic talent. For the most
part, these artists know each other. They compete against one
another. They socialize with one another. They commiserate with
one another. They are a community and their continued investment
of ability and support within that community is reflected in
the enthusiasm and vitality of that which they create.
It
is the goal of The Artist Index to share these special people
with the world that inspires them and to promote the galleries
which encourage and support their efforts.

A
North Ossetia native from Russia's Caucasus Mountains, Vadim
Bora is a virtuoso in graphite, ink, and charcoal. From interpretive
portraits in oil to humorous caricatures, from monumental sculpture
to interior decorative forms, the artist captures in only a
few lines, the essence of figure and emotion.
Bora was awarded the coveted status of “Person with
Extraordinary Abilities” by the U.S. Government and moved
to the United States in 1993. In 1998, he opened his own
studio-gallery in the bustling heart of downtown Asheville.
There he creates his master works, found in museums and private
and corporate collections around the world, including the
Ministry of Culture Collection in Moscow, Russia. In the
summer of 2002, the artist opened Vadim Bora Gallery, a showcase
of classical and contemporary sculpture, painting, and works

A
native of Spartanburg, Cromer attended Art Schools in Nashville,
Pittsburgh and New York. He holds an Honors degree from the
Art Center School in Los Angeles. He has traveled extensively
as a professional artist, painting and exhibiting internationally.
He lived in Europe for many years and was based in London.
Cromer returned to South Carolina in 1993, making homes in Spartanburg
and Beaufort, where he is active as an exhibiting artist. He
has lectured and taught at the Spartanburg
Art Museum School (SAM) and holds regional workshops. He
is a "Member with Excellence" in the South Carolina
Watercolor Society and served as Exhibition Chairman for the
year 2000.
Cromer's work is represented internationally in many private
and public collections.
"I
have been painting for over 50 years, always experimenting with
new ideas as experience and maturity develop. Although I have
worked with most media, I always return to watercolor for its
absolute purity of color and light; plus the ability to establish
a pictorial idea fast and spontaneously. My current work has
been described as 'fresh, cleanly executed, and brilliant in
color.' The sum total of my work to date covers various themes
and "isms" but the enduring fact is that all my work
has its beginning and/or end in my personal love and experience
with landscape—here, there and everywhere!"

After
receiving degrees from Brevard College and the University of
North Carolina, Cunningham spent the better part of a year in
Lausanne, Switzerland before coming to Spartanburg, SC where
he worked as an architectural illustrator and a graphic designer.
In
addition to his career in the commercial arts, over the last
twenty years Cunningham has been deeply involved in the development
and promotion of the visual arts in Spartanburg and the surrounding
region.
He has served The Artists' Guild of Spartanburg,
The Guild of South Carolina Artists, and was
involved in helping to start The Guild Gallery on Main
in downtown Spartanburg as well as The Art of the Upstate
Gallery at the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport.
Since
August of 2000, he has scheduled and overseen curation of exhibitions
for Spartanburg Art Museum (110 exhibits
through 2/08).
Beginning
about 2005, Cunningham began to channel his creative energy
into the production of fine art.

untitled

|
The
enthusiasm with which Ann Dergara approaches her art is a lifelong
passion. Born to Norwegian-German parents who recognized and
nurtured her creative abilities, the Greenville native sold
her first painting five years prior to beginning her formal
education at Georgia State University. In 1978, a printmaking
course at Atlanta College of Art led her to Dick Williams and
the innovative and contemporary Odyssey Studio. The artist pursued
the etching and the collagraph, later the serigraph, and in
1990 began monoprinting.
Although her mastery of the art of printmaking is described
as remarkable, painting remains Dergara’s first love,
and a vibrant testament to her profound talent. Santiago Leon
of ARTEFINO speaks for many admirers that Ann’s work is
typical of an artist assured of her own talent; it is unconstrained,
blending great skill and maturity with the free spirit of a
child.
Dergara is intent on achieving the original, the unique, the
different - but only as it celebrates what is positive and beautiful.
Her brilliant use of color expresses her passionate respect
for the harmony of nature - a recurring theme in a body of work
that brings her growing, international acclaim.

Jill
Jones holds degrees from the University of South Carolina and
Converse College. Working primarily in oils and pastel, she
has had work included in exhibitions juried by such prestigious
curators as Lilian Tone of the Museum of Modem Art in New York,
nationally-known artist Burton Silverman and internationally-known
artist and illustrator Sue Coe. Her work has garnered numerous
awards, including Best of Shows from Upstate Visual Arts in
Greenville, SC, the Anderson County Juried Exhibition in Anderson,
SC and the Artists' Guild of Spartanburg.
Jones focuses almost exclusively on landscapes, painting largely
from memory of a childhood spent in the rural Upstate of South
Carolina. The scenes are pointedly simple - fields overtaken
my kudzu, forgotten peach orchards and overgrown fields - and
recall long days spent on horseback exploring her surroundings.
But the work is less sentimental than it is dark and moody,
with something of an existential quality.
"To
me, all landscapes are self portraits," Jones says. "Trees
serve as surrogates for the human form. Skies reflect mood.
Even the lay of the land, whether rolling and expansive or flat
and confined, represents less the world around me than a world
within."
She expresses this with a simplified language of color and form,
using a grayed-down palette of greens, blues and violets. She
often begins a painting with nothing more than a general idea
of what she wants to express: the contrast of a shady path that
empties into white-hot sunlight; the silhouette of a hedge at
dusk; an eerily still yellow sky. "I prefer to err on the
side of simplicity. Too much information and the mystery is
spoiled. That's why I paint from memory. It helps me edit extraneous
details and focus on shape and shadow, mood and feeling - the
elements of landscape painting I like most."
Jones has been represented since 2002 by Elder Gallery in Charlotte,
where she has been featured in both solo and two-person shows
as well as regular gallery exhibitions. Her work is included
in private and corporate collections across the United States.

Zoole holds degrees from Agnes Scott College, the University
of Colorado and North Texas University. She is the recipient
of a Fulbright Scholarship. Her serious pursuit of art followed
these academic achievements with the intensive study of water-media
with nationally known artists.
She is a Signature Member of both the National Watercolor Association
and the South Carolina Watercolor Society. In 2006 Zoole was
juried into the prestigious American Watercolor Society's annual
show, winning an award and, having her painting chosen as part
of the traveling exhibit, A grant was awarded to her by the
Spartanburg Arts Partnership in 2004., enabling her to paint
a series entitled: "The Bed,: Archetypal, and Ordinary".
For two consecutive years she has been designated as a fellow
in the Artist in Residency program at the Hambidge Center.
Chairs, tables and sofas continue to be central, to many of
Zoole's interiors, implying social interchange and projecting
) warmth., comfort and hospitality. Recently, the subject of
the bed led to a series of paintings. Currently, the content
of her paintings has shifted from the psychological and social
to the more spiritual in her series "House Blessings",
Zoole continues to paint her interiors, as she seeks to see
her subject matter from a different perspective.
"The composition of a scene—what you might see through
a camera lens—is what initially catches my eye and sparks
my interest," says Zoole, "Then I either take a digital
picture or makes a quick sketch." The basic sketch is then
transferred to paper or canvas. Once a sound composition is
established, it is then refined with color, line -md design,
Embellishing or decorating the surface, using stamps that she
has custom-made, as well. as collaging images into the work,
adds additional layers to her work. Characteristic of her paintings
is the dark outlining of the shapes within the compositions.
