Seven Gates of Ritual
An installation of charcoal drawings and artists' books

( images below )
This installation is available for exhibition at
galleries and museums.

This installation was a year in progress. It represents the development of an idea that began with my love for charcoal drawings and a growing fascination with artists' books.

Bringing the two mediums together creates a symbiotic relationship. The power of the large scale visual image is enhanced by the intimacy of the hand held book. The pairing together of these two mediums in The Seven Gates of Ritual invites the viewer on a primal journey into the self.

The concept of "gate" in this installation refers to a symbolic rather than a physical threshold: a time of change, of crossing over into a new place, of awareness.

Using a rich language of personal imagery, rituals are explored that are inherently archetypal: birth and death, parenthood, the search for spirituality, the discovery and development of self. In this way, the artist's exploration becomes the viewer's own.

Each of the seven drawings and accompanying books represents a specific gate, and may be viewed sequentially or at random. The books are designed to be examined page by page, volume by volume - itself a ritualistic process.

The Seven Gates are foremost my own gates of ritual, but it is my intention that they represent universal ideas. You may find yourself drawn to one more than another, suggesting you are at a specific stage in your own life. About the Books

About the Books (images below) - For those who are unfamiliar with the artists book medium will find that my books are one-of-a-kind handbound books that contain drawings, photographs, and Xerox transfers along with varying styles of text. It is the content within the pages that makes the handmade book an "artists book."
